"Golf is the closest game to the game we call life.
You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots
– but you have to play the ball where it lies." - Bobby Jones

C. Cost of Tournaments –
1. In general the price to play golf is continuing to go up.
a. Courses are putting a premium on scheduling tournaments i.e. shotguns. Example the LA
courses we are playing are $70 tee times, $88 shotgun and need 72 players minimum and shotgun start time is 7:30 or earlier are not an option anymore unless we play a private
course. On public course shotguns pay ultra premium price. $15-$18 bump
b. Courses are no longer offering a senior discount on tournaments.
c. Courses are charging a booking fee extra to book consecutive tee times in a row.
d. Golf courses are charging a premium for early tee times with dynamic pricing.
e. Courses are continuing to raise the rate of carts and range balls as a way of getting around
gouging golfers for green fees. Example Navy now charges $18 per person for a cart and
many places charge $17 like all the Long Beach Courses. Range balls for a warm up bucket are
up to $7 -$9 each.
Ways in which we are trying to save money on green fees
1. Look for courses that give us the best value for the price. Example of this is playing
private courses that might be a small percentage higher on green fees but throw in range
balls, give us shotguns or premium tee times. Instead of fighting with the public courses
that might be less expensive on green fees but when you throw in range balls and a shotgun
or ask for consecutive early morning tee times the price goes up. Plus, the quality of golf
courses at private clubs is just better.
2. Where range balls are not included buying 3-6 large buckets and splitting balls for all who
want to hit. Cheaper than purchasing 40 warm up buckets at $7 - $9 each.
3. If have to, book starts with later tee times where dynamic pricing doesn’t kick in or is
waived.
4. Continue to negotiate with local courses for better prices.
5. Play courses farther away that aren’t as busy to get better rates.
6. Piggyback a tournament with another club. More golfers at a venue usually helps cut
prices but it also makes for longer days. We did this today at Alta Vista and it did not effect
pace of play.
7. Open floor to other suggestions.
